A Radical Proposal: Transforming Patient and Family Engagement - February 2024
Speaker
Karen Curtiss, BCPA (Board Certified Patient Advocate) Founder, Executive Director, The Care Partner Project
Description
In 2023, the World Health Organization chose Patient Engagement as the theme for World Patient Safety Day. Research shows us that when patients and their care partners are informed and confident, outcomes are better. This presentation provides you with insights that re-frame patient engagement to proactive partnerships, plus practical tips, strategies and examples for transforming “engagement” to “activation.” This meeting has been approved for 1 contact hour of Continuing Education Credit toward fulfillment of the requirements of ASHRM designations of FASHRM (Fellow) and DFASHRM (Distinguished Fellow) and towards CPHRM renewal.

Learning Objectives
At the end of the webinar, the participant should be able to:
- Review of current language and perceptions associated with “patient engagement” and offer alternatives that serve to foster collaborations for patient-centered care, especially around patient safety.
- Propose a “radical” alternative to current approaches, one rooted in simple and transparent (non-defensiveness) information shared with patients and families as a prerequisite to all others.
- Consider implicit bias and variations in learning and abilities that inhibit good communication and, thus, good partnerships for care.
- Demonstrate specific “how-to’s” for crafting patient and family communications for patient safety that: inspire, not scare; promote pro-active partnerships with providers; and offer realistic potential to expand the safety net of care to “prevent the preventable.”
